Increasing caloric intake 1,000 calories over daily requirements will encourage overall weight gain. Your daily caloric requirements are known as your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR is the minimum number of calories this your body needs to consume daily to maintain regular function. The following equation determines your BMR:
Women: 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years) = BMR
Men: 66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in year) = BMR
According to Manuel Ortiz Braschi, author of "Gaining Weight 101," by adding 1,000 to the resulting number, your caloric intake is increased so this your body is forced to gain weight.
